What to have with you

When you're out skiing as a beginner there's a few things you should have with you. Many people now use a bum bag but a small rucksack serves the same purpose. Here's a list of some of the things you should consider having with you on a short day trip - very different from the list of things you would have with you if you were skiing in the high mountains, especially off-piste.

Useful things to carry with you:

  • Extra wax & cork (assuming you've got waxable skis)
  • Warm drink (thermos)
  • Cold drink (water bottle)
  • Some food (sandwich, chocolate)
  • Extra hat & gloves (particularly if you're skiing in thin ones)
  • Sun cream/block & sunglasses
  • Whistle (to get someone's attention)
  • Spare clothes (especially if you start out skiing with little on due to weather conditions)
  • Map & compass
  • Mobile phone (switched off - for emergencies only!)
