Travel to Venabu

Venabu is easily accessible from both Oslo and Trondheim. Venabu Fjellhotell is on road 27, “Rondevegen”. At an altitude of 932m, we are on the mountain pass between Gudbrandsdalen & Østerdalen, just south of Rondane National Park. The Enden to Folldal section of road 27 is known as the “Rondane National Tourist Road”.

by train (and bus)

Travel by train to get to Ringebu (the closest station to Venabu) is straightforward and rail services in Norway are excellent. We will pick you up from the railway station in Ringebu, if you book this service with us in advance, please see below. The transfer time to the hotel from the station is about twenty minutes.

Changes to rail travel since August 2023

Due to significant flooding in early August 2023 (Storm Hans), the rail bridge leading into Ringebu being repaired. It will probably take about a year to replace it.

The rail service continues to run with a well-organised replacement bus service between Fåvang and Ringebu.

Travellers now change onto the replacement bus at Fåvang. The bus stop is right outside the railway station, well-signed and the staff speak English.

The timetable is the same, except for night trains and two services from Trondheim (05:50 and 13:18 Trondheim – Oslo). The arrival into Ringebu from Oslo is about 10 minutes later than the original schedule. We will always wait for the buses in Ringebu if they are delayed.

Rail tickets are only available 3 months before departure, which means that your tickets will have the correct departure/arrival times when you buy them.

We still recommend everybody to buy their tickets in advance. The buses will have the capacity for rail passengers.

We will keep this page up to date if and when there are any changes.

At Oslo Gardermoen airport (lufthavn) the railway station is in the same building as the airport, downstairs. Buying tickets is easy: online with Vy’s app, at the ticket machines or in person. You’ll find that the station staff speak excellent English and everything is well-signposted.

Booking ahead – once you know your flights and you have decided to travel by train/bus it makes sense to book your journey. Trains can become booked up – everyone has a seat, no standing. Booking ahead may also give you the option of a reduced price ticket, the minipris ticket, though this is non-refundable. The Entur website is easy to use and has an English version.

Take the train to Ringebu on the Dovre railway line. It’s a scenic journey of about two and a half hours from Oslo Gardermoen. Oslo city centre and Lillehammer are on the same rail line.
