Celebrate the New Year in Norway

Traditional Norwegian New Year celebrations

Join us at Venabu and see in the New Year in Norway

At Venabu Fjellhotell we welcome the New Year in a traditional way. Outside it is snowy and there are winter activities to enjoy such as cross country skiing, horse drawn sleigh rides and dogsledding. Inside there is a roaring fire, a welcoming atmosphere and good food. Whether you are a couple, a family or a solo traveller you can be sure of a warm and festive welcome at Venabu.

Venabu is situated up in the mountains at approximately 950m asl. We are surrounded by a superb cross country ski area with a good snow record. Over Christmas and New Year we offer our Classic Cross Country Skiing Holiday and we have hotel and cabin guests who come to enjoy the festivities. Whatever kind of holiday you prefer at New Year: being active or taking time to relax, you can enjoy your holiday with us.

New Year’s Eve

Throughout the seasonal holidays Venabu offers a programme of convivial activities, with something for everyone. After a morning of skiing, or being cosy by the fire, the festivities begin.

A lighthearted New Year’s concert in the nearby mountain chapel starts the celebrations. After the concert we make our way back to the hotel in a torchlit procession. There is an aperitif in the lounge before dinner.  On New Year’s Eve we serve special a four course evening meal of traditional Norwegian food with accompaniments from the local area.

After dinner there is music and dancing in the lounge.  At midnight we welcome in the New Year with a glass of sparkling wine and New Year’s candles outside in the winter night.

The evening’s celebrations are rounded off with a light supper.

During the whole of the New Year week we have a special programme of activities, including our cheery, family “Ski Race” where little ski ability is required! Find out what you can include in your holiday at Venabu.

New Year in Norway – there are plenty of activities to choose from

Delicious food

Venabu takes great pride in serving delicious, good food. Many of our dishes are local specialities from Gudbrandsdalen. As part of our commitment to both local food and sustainability we prioritise locally sourced ingredients and local suppliers.

For our New Year four course, gala dinner, traditional Norwegian dishes are served. This year there will be a trout roulade starter followed by a warming soup and then New Year turkey with side dishes. A dessert buffet rounds off the meal with tempting treats, fruit, cheese and biscuits. Vegetarians are, of course, welcome and we offer a good vegetarian menu.

Please let us know in advance if you would like a vegetarian meal or have any special dietary needs.

Every Wednesday, including New Year week, we invite you to “A taste of Norwegian tradition” – our popular 3-course dinner with traditional flavours and storytelling.

During December, as Christmas approaches, we offer “Julebord” weekends with a traditional rakfisk dinner on the Friday night and a five course pre-Christmas menu on the Saturday evening.
